History OF THEKIOSQUE DES DES BASTIONS

Ideally located near Geneva’s Old Town, Parc des Bastions is an iconic part of the city’s landscape. Over the centuries, this green haven evolved, before eventually becoming home to a restaurant. When the Kiosque des Bastions opened, it marked a significant turning point in the park’s history, lifting it with fresh energy.

AN ICONIC VENUE

The Kiosque des Bastions has a unique history, and is an integral part of Geneva’s heritage. Built between 1881 and 1882, it was one of the city’s first pavilions (kiosques): a remarkable achievement that reflected Geneva’s ambitions at the time. Fully opening out onto the park, the structure is celebrated for its architectural elegance. Over the decades, its various owners have sought ways to bring in the crowds. A full glass enclosure was added later to protect the building from the noise and winds.

Between 1907 and 1923, one enterprising owner transformed the pavilion into a cinema, which proved a resounding success. A year later, the facilities were modernised, but the venue gradually declined, to the point where local politicians debated demolishing it. By the early 1980s, the pavilion – then known as the Café-Restaurant du Parc des Bastions – experienced a revival, offering locals a convenient and accessible spot for refreshments.

A REVITALISEDGENEVA INSTITUTION

Over time, the Café-Restaurant du Parc des Bastions became a true Geneva institution, evoking cherished memories for many locals. Whether associated with childhood, the Reformation Wall, or the famous Escalade race, the establishment holds a special place in people’s hearts. However, many felt that the venue needed modernising.

After several months of renovations, the iconic restaurant reopened in spring 2022 under a completely new concept: the Kiosque des Bastions. The goal was to modernise the venue while honouring its original purpose and historic name as a pavilion, or kiosque. Today, the modern brasserie offers Genevans a warm, welcoming place to gather
